Gifts that Give Back 2019

As many of you know, before we had kids I worked for several nonprofits in fundraising. I decided to take a step back when our kids were itty bitty to focus on our family but the act of giving has always held a special place in my heart. I thought it was only fitting to put together a capsule of “gifts that give back”! Take a second to read the captions to learn how each company is making an impact!

FEED Light weight Tote
Market Tote / Wine Tote / Woman on a Mission Tote
Lauren Bush Lauren founded FEED in 2007 after seeing the reality of childhood hunger firsthand, while traveling with the World Food Programme. She created the first FEED Bag as a tangible way for her peers to get involved. To this day, every product they make has a number, representing the school meals donated with its purchase. The Serious Goose by Jimmy Kimmel
This book is sure to have your child cracking up! Kids are challenged to try and make the serious goose smile in a mylar mirror. I can hear the giggles now…and the best part is Jimmy Kimmel is donating all of the money he makes from the book to CHLA (Children’s Hospital Los Angeles) and children’s hospitals around the country.
Anchor Beads, Chinoiserie Coconut Wood Necklace
Anchor Beads was founded after a young girl named Georgia was diagnosed with Leukemia. She and her mother began making jewelry for fun and when she was in the PICU, it transitioned into her mother’s therapy. Georgia entered the gates of Heaven in late 2015 but Anchor Beads now raises money for childhood cancer (10% of every order) in honor of her life. Take a look at the endless options for wonderful beaded necklaces.
Cuddle + Kind
Charlotte the dog / Sebastian the lamb
Cuddle + Kind was created to make beautiful hand-knit dolls that would also help feed children. For every doll sold, Cuddle + Kind gives 10 meals to children in need. Since September 2015 they have provided over 8 million meals to children in need! On top of helping provide meals to children in need, the dolls are also lovingly handcrafted by women in Peru, providing them with a sustainable, fair trade income! A true, win-win! These also make a wonderful new baby gift!
STATE Bags
STATE Bags are durable and full of style but the best part is they give back! The bags range from stylish backpacks & lunch bags for kids and adults to bags for the gym, on-the-go moms and dads, fanny packs and more! For every bag purchased, STATE supports American children and families in need…in the ways they need it most. They donate fully-packed backpacks, fund special projects with partner charities and schools, and shed light around social injustices impacting those we serve. This season, the company has partnered with “Change to Mind,” an organization founded by Glenn Close. The organization’s goal is to bring awareness to, and end discrimination, of mental illness.

Love Your Melon
Love Your Melon was founded in an entrepreneurship class at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota by two friends, Zachary and Brian. They wanted to start a business with a meaningful and positive social impact. Since October 2012 they have been on a mission to put a hat on every child battling cancer in America. After achieving the original goal, they set a new goal of giving one million dollars to pediatric cancer research and providing immediate support to children and their families. To date, they have given over 6.5 million dollars to the fight against pediatric cancer and over 180,000 hats to children battling cancer. 50% of their net profit from the sale of all Love Your Melon products is now given to support charitable programming through the Love Your Melon Fund and the nonprofits they support. They have endless hat designs and color combinations…so check them out this winter!
Bombas
The name Bombas is derived from the Latin word for bumblebee. Bees live in a hive and work together to make their world a better place. They’re small, but their combined actions have a big impact on the world. Bombas liked that and that’s why their mantra is bee better. When they first learned socks were the most requested clothing item in homeless shelters, they knew they had to do something. They started Bombas to make an impact on their community by donating a pair of socks for every pair they sold, and continue that philosophy of thoughtful giving towards each clothing item they make. No matter what it is, one purchased = one donated. To date they’ve donated over 25 million pairs!
LEGO – Build to Give
Play has a powerful effect on children and families, especially for those who find themselves in difficult circumstances during the holidays. Together we can make the season brighter for 1,000,000 children around the world. Lego is asking you to visit a participating store or use your LEGO® bricks at home to build a fun holiday ornament. When you display it in-store or share it online with #BuildtoGive, they will donate a LEGO set to a child in need of play. So while this isn’t technically giving a gift that gives back…it’s a way to give a gift simply by building with the LEGOs you already own!
